Triethylamine hydrochloride (Et3NHCl) and anhydrous FeCl3 were mixed at 80 °C to synthesize xEt3NHCl-FeCl3 ionic liquid, which is a liquid at room temperature with low viscosity, and showed significant desulphurization of thiophene in n-octane and fluidized catalytic cracked (FCC) gasoline, with the 1.6 Et3NHCl-FeCl3 was the most effective in desulphurization.
The preparation method was as follows:
Anhydrous FeCl3 and Et3NHCl were used directly without further purification. Et3NHCl (0.14-0.18 mol) was mixed with FeCl3 (0.1 mol) and heated to 80°C in air with stirring until a clear brown liquid was obtained. When the ratio of Et3NHCl to FeCl3 is below 1.4 or above 1.8, unreacted solids remain in the mixture at room temperature.
