Guanidine Hydrochloride

Guanidine hydrochloride is a strong protein denaturant that functions as a chaotropic agent. As a typical chemical denaturant, guanidine hydrochloride has two amino groups on the molecular structure, which can form new hydrogen bonds with the hydroxyl, carboxyl and amino groups of collagen molecules, thus replacing the intermolecular and intramolecular partial hydrogen bonds of the original collagen molecules. These changes result in the conformation or aggregation of the protein [1]. At high concentrations of guanidine hydrochloride, proteins lose their ordered structure and they tend to curl randomly, i.e. without any residual structure. However, at concentrations in the millimolar range in vivo, guanidine hydrochloride has been shown to cure prion-positive yeast cells. As a unique organic compound, guanidine hydrochloride currently plays an important role in the application of biomedicine and other fields.
