Deoxynucleotide triphosphates (dNTPs) are biological molecules involved in the construction of nucleic acids. Structurally, each DNTP is composed of a phosphate group, a deoxyribon and a nitrogen-containing base. The nitrogenous group can be a heterocyclic purine or pyrimidine structure, which supports the base pair interactions during DNA amplification. Specific pairings between these molecules allow nucleic acids to carry genetic information. There are four types of dNTPs based on the nitrogenous base contained in their structure: dATP, dTTP, dCTP and dGTP. These four dNTPs are the precursors for DNA synthesis.
