Propylene glycol (PG), a versatile organic solvent with low toxicity, plays a significant role in enhancing hydrogen (H₂) production efficiency when combined with innovative hybrid catalysts. Recent research demonstrated the use of a hybrid metal-free catalyst, Chit-Mont-H, which involves chitosan (Chit) dispersed on montmorillonite (Mont) and subsequently protonated through calcination and hydrothermal methods. This novel Chit-Mont-H catalyst, when paired with propylene glycol or a mixture of propylene glycol and methanol, enabled highly efficient H₂ production from sodium borohydride (NaBH₄), marking a first in literature.
Characterization techniques confirmed the structural and chemical properties of Chit-Mont-H. Propylene glycol, as a reaction medium, provided unique benefits by interacting synergistically with the Chit-Mont-H catalyst, facilitating NaBH₄ hydrolysis and optimizing H₂ release rates. The catalytic experiments conducted with varying concentrations of NaBH₄ (0.125-0.5 g) and different ratios of propylene glycol to methanol (ranging from 1:9 to 6:4) across temperatures (20, 30, 40, and 50 °C) showcased that the propylene glycol/methanol mixture significantly enhanced H₂ production rates compared to pure solvents.
Importantly, the reusability tests of the Chit-Mont-H catalyst in a propylene glycol/methanol medium demonstrated excellent stability and consistency in H₂ generation over five cycles at 30 °C. The efficient recycling without significant loss of catalytic performance highlights the potential of propylene glycol as a sustainable solvent in catalytic systems.
