Sorbitan Trioleate for the Preparation of Hydrophobic Composite Membranes

Production of calcium nitrate crystals via membrane distillation crystallization using polyvinylidene fluoride/sorbitan trioleate membranes Nasiraee M, et al. Advanced Powder Technology, 2021, 32(5), 1463-1471.

Sorbitan trioleate (Span 85) can be combined with polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) to create hydrophobic PVDF/Span 85 membranes.
Membrane Preparation: The membranes were produced using an immersion precipitation method with a PVDF concentration of 10% by weight in the casting solution. Initially, PVDF was dissolved in DMAc by stirring with a magnetic stirrer at room temperature for about an hour. Various concentrations of Span 85 (ranging from 0-6 wt%) were then added to the polymer solution, followed by continuous stirring for 15 hours. After 4-5 hours of degassing, the solution was evenly spread on a smooth glass plate using a casting knife with a 350 μm gap. After 10 seconds, the cast film was submerged in a distilled water bath at room temperature. The membranes were then transferred to a second water bath, where they remained for approximately 12 hours.
