Hexadecyltrimethylammonium chloride (ATMAC-C16) is a quaternary ammonium compound (QAC) with strong antibacterial properties. In this case, different concentrations of ATMAC-C16 were applied to the partial nitrification/anammox (PN/A) system in turn to explore the performance of the PN/A system and its ability to tolerate different concentrations of ATMAC-C16.
The results showed that nitrogen removal efficiency was influenced by environmental and extreme levels of ATMAC-C16, primarily by affecting the anammox (hzsB) gene. Two types of anammox bacteria, Candidatus Jettenia and Candidatus Kuenenia, were enriched under the pressure of ATMAC-C16, which allowed the PN/A system to maintain good nitrogen removal performance.
ATMAC-C16 decreased the relative abundances of most antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) but significantly enriched quaternary ammonium compound resistance genes (QRGs). The tolerance of the PN/A system to ATMAC-C16 might have been strengthened by inducing the expression of efflux pump encoding genes (qacH-01/02).
Pseudoxanthomonas mexicana was identified as an ATMAC-C16 resistant strain, and its resistance to 10 mg/L ATMAC-C16 might have been obtained not only by capturing the qacH gene but also by benefiting from its own efflux pump system. Therefore, the spread risk of QRGs and ATMAC-C16 resistant strains in PN/A techniques should be taken seriously, especially from the perspective of the transmission of resistance genes, particularly QRGs.
